Restorative Dentistry in Houston, TX

Restorative dentistry includes various dental procedures that restore or replace a tooth. The goals of restorative dentistry are to restore regular functioning and the appearance of the teeth and prevent future oral health concerns. It also includes treatments from other dental fields, like endodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics, meeting the requirements of patients that need multifaceted care from more than one specialist.

Restorative Dentistry Procedures

The most common dental procedures that fall under the category of restorative dentistry include:

  • Cavity Filling

It is the most common restorative dental procedure. The dentist removes the damaged part of the tooth and fills it with composite material called filling. It prevents the bacteria from further infecting the tooth and the adjacent areas.

  • Root Canal

It is required when a cavity progresses deep into the tooth, exposing the soft pulp inside the tooth to oral bacteria. The dentist cleans out the soft pulp from the tooth and fills it with the composite material. Once filled, it can no longer become infected, and the tooth would be saved. A ceramic crown will be placed on it to protect it from any damage.

  • Dental Crown

When a tooth gets damaged because of tooth decay or an injury, it can be reinforced with a dental crown. It is a cap-like restoration placed over a tooth that strengthens and protects the tooth structure. Dentists buff down the enamel of the damaged or decayed tooth and place the dental crown on it to restore its strength and structural stability.

  • Dental Implant

Dental implants replace a missing, damaged, or decayed tooth. It is a complete artificial tooth and root system. The implant made of titanium is surgically placed in the jawbone to form a solid hold. Next, a crown is attached to its top with the help of a connecting abutment. The implant functions just like a natural tooth and is considered the best tooth replacement procedure.

  • Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that bridges the gap between the missing teeth. It is a simpler alternative for dental implants as they do not require surgery to be placed. A dental bridge rests on the gums, held by dental crowns on either side of the gap.

  • Dentures

Dentures are fixed or removable sets of prosthetic teeth and are the best restorations if you have lost multiple teeth. It consists of an entire arch of teeth. Removable dentures are attached to the gums via suction or adhesives, while implant-supported dental dentures are held by dental implants placed in the jaw.

  • Dental Bonding

Bonding is used to fill cavities, repair chipped teeth, cover the stained surfaces of teeth and incorporate composite resin fillings. It is applied to the teeth in multiple layers and hardened using a curing light.
