If you’re a hockey player, you’re probably focused on skating faster, hitting the puck harder, and scoring goals more. In addition to all of these things, you also need to focus on your smile. This is important because the sport of hockey can be dangerous for your smile, especially because it’s high in contact. So, to help you care for your smile during hockey season in Houston, Texas, our dentist, Dr. Celso Seretti, has some tips for you.
First, wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard is a strong appliance that can protect your teeth when hard, forceful objects hit your mouth, which will most likely happen while you play hockey because a blow to the face is common. If you wear a mouthguard, there is a good chance you can prevent oral injury, like chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth.
Second, avoid drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar, and sugar promotes tooth decay. This means you are increasing your risk of cavities each time you drink a sports drink. So, try to drink water instead.
